Reducing Test Anxiety
It is not uncommon for people to feel anxious prior to taking an exam. There are some steps or strategies you can use to try and reduce test anxiety and to help you stay in control during the testing period.
First you will want to make sure you plan ahead to know how much time you will need to devote to studying for your test. Then you must follow through and stick to your study plan so you do not have to cram the night before, which would likely increase your test anxiety as you may realize how much of the information you do no know and how ill prepared you are to even take the test. That is what you want to avoid, so plan to spend enough time studying and then actually do spend enough time studying. That does not mean you have to over study as that may also cause you to be more anxious.
Get a good night sleep before you have to go sit for your test. Taking a test with little sleep can add to your feelings of test anxiety so get plenty of rest to help with reducing those anxious feelings.
Staying healthy and eating properly may help to reduce anxiety in general. It is very important however to make sure you eat healthy and a good breakfast the day of your test. If your test is later in the morning you may want a healthy snack. If it is in the afternoon then a light but healthy lunch may also help.
Stay positive in your thinking. If you let yourself start thinking negatively about how you will perform on the test it very well could increase instead of reduce your test anxiety. Tell yourself that you are going to do fine and to keep moving along and a steady pace. Do not sit there thinking over and over again that you are going to fail, that is negative thinking and may hurt your performance.
Before you go in to take your test try some relaxation techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, listening to claming music, etc that will help you with overcoming the anxious feelings… What ever techniques or strategies that works for you to help you relax and clear your mind. Also try to stay away from or avoid negative people before the test especially other people who have test anxiety, you do not want it to rub off on to you when you are managing or coping with your own issues.
